I’ve been working on a felt nativity sewing pattern, and I’m almost ready to release it in my Etsy shop! I’m so excited to finally share this project that has been occupying my brain for the past several weeks.
The inspiration came from a felt nativity pattern my mom made when I was little. Every Christmas, I looked forward to setting it out, and it became one of those traditions that stuck with me long after childhood. When I started looking for a pattern to recreate those memories, I couldn’t find one that captured the style I was looking for. So naturally, I decided the world needed one.
I’ve thought about designing sewing patterns for years, but the learning curve of pattern design software, combined with the challenge of actually creating a pattern people could successfully follow, always felt a little overwhelming. Then summer break arrived. While it’s never quite long enough, it gives my brain a chance to slow down, recharge, and tackle projects that require learning entirely new skills.
I decided to start with Mary, but Joseph and Baby Jesus are close behind. I want to release all three around the same time so you’ll have the core of the nativity together. After that, I’ll move on to the remaining figures, and that’s where I plan to have a little more fun with embroidery and decorative details. Mary and Joseph were humble people, so I intentionally kept their designs simple. They also make a great introduction for beginners before the more detailed characters arrive.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at creating Mary. It took four different prototypes before I finally landed on the design that felt just right.
